Chinese New Year traditions

This year, the children in Ms Huang's classes at Heathfield Primary School further improved their knowledge of Chinese New Year.

They have learned answers to all of the following questions about Chinese New Year:

Q - Which animal year are we welcoming?

A - The year of the Ox, Moo.

Q - What do Chinese call ‘Chinese New Year’?  Why?

A - Chinese call ‘Chinese New Year’ Spring Festival because it marks the start of spring in China.

Q - Why do Chinese people have to spring clean before the Chinese New Year?

A - To clean away any bad spirits from last year.

Q - Why do Chinese people put up red decorations to celebrate Chinese New Year?

A - To scare off the monster ‘Nian’.
